Privacy

Jet Lag Planner is operated by XOR Limited, a company registered in New Zealand. This page explains what we do and do not collect, who else receives information about your visit, and what you can do about it.

The short version

The trip you plan never leaves your browser. The site itself is an ordinary website: the web server keeps technical logs, and the pages carry third-party advertising, which uses cookies and similar technologies. You can refuse or withdraw consent for advertising and analytics cookies at any time.

Your trip data stays on your device

Every calculation happens on your own device. There is no account, no login, and no server that receives your flights, dates, or sleep times. Those details live in the address of the page you are looking at, after the # symbol, which browsers do not send to the server.

When you share a plan, you are sharing that link, and it contains the trip details you entered. Anyone with the link can see that trip, so share it only with people you are happy to show it to.

What we collect

Server logs

Like almost every web server, our host records a short-lived technical log of each request: your IP address, the file requested, the time, the referring page, and your browser's user agent string. We use these only to keep the site running and secure, and to diagnose faults. They are not used to build a profile of you.

Advertising

This site carries advertising supplied by Google and its partners. To serve, measure, and (where you allow it) personalise those ads, Google may set and read cookies or similar identifiers on your device, and may process your IP address, approximate location, browser and device information, and the pages you view here.

Google acts as an independent controller of that information, not as our processor. We do not receive the underlying data, and we cannot see who you are. How Google uses information from sites that carry its ads is described in Google's policy for partner sites.

Analytics

We use Google Analytics 4 to understand which pages are read and how people arrive, so we can improve the articles and the tool. It reports traffic in aggregate and is not used to identify you personally. Google processes this on our behalf, and the same partner-sites policy describes what it does with the data.

Cookies and similar technologies

Cookies on this site fall into three groups.

  • Strictly necessary. Needed for the site to work and to remember your privacy choices. These do not require consent.
  • Analytics. Help us count visits and see which articles are useful.
  • Advertising. Set by Google and its partners to serve, cap, measure and personalise ads.

Where the law requires consent before non-essential cookies are set, most importantly in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland, analytics and advertising storage is switched off by default and stays off unless you agree. Visits from those regions are counted without cookies until then. Elsewhere, including New Zealand, these cookies are set by default and you can opt out at any time. You can change or withdraw your choice through the privacy settings link in the site footer, and you can block or delete cookies in your browser settings.

Turning off personalised ads

You can limit ad personalisation without leaving the web:

Turning off personalisation does not remove the ads. It means they are chosen without using a profile of your interests.

Information sent overseas

Our advertising and analytics providers, and possibly our host, store and process information on servers outside New Zealand, including in the United States and the European Union. Under Information Privacy Principle 12 of the Privacy Act 2020 we take reasonable steps to satisfy ourselves that any overseas recipient of personal information protects it with safeguards comparable to those in the Act, whether through binding contractual terms, an approved transfer mechanism, or the recipient being subject to comparable privacy law.

How long we keep things

Server logs are kept only as long as we need them for security and fault-finding, and are then deleted or overwritten. We do not hold a database of visitors. Information held by Google is retained according to Google's own published retention periods, which we do not control.

Your rights in New Zealand

The Privacy Act 2020 gives you the right to ask what personal information we hold about you and to ask us to correct it. Write to our privacy officer using the details below and we will respond within 20 working days.

If you are not satisfied with our response, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner: privacy.org.nz, enquiries@privacy.org.nz, or 0800 803 909.

If you are in the EEA or the UK

Where the GDPR or UK GDPR applies to your visit, our lawful bases are your consent for advertising and analytics cookies, and our legitimate interest in keeping the site secure and working for the server logs. You have the right to access, correct, erase, restrict, and object to processing of your personal data, the right to data portability, and the right to withdraw consent at any time without affecting processing that already happened. You may also complain to your national supervisory authority, or to the Information Commissioner's Office in the UK.

New Zealand holds an adequacy decision from the European Commission, so personal data may be transferred from the EEA to New Zealand without additional safeguards.

If you are in California

Allowing personalised advertising involves what the CCPA and CPRA call "sharing" personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising. We do not sell personal information for money. You can opt out of that sharing using the privacy settings link in the site footer, and we honour Global Privacy Control signals sent by your browser. You also have rights to know, delete, and correct, and we will not discriminate against you for using them.

Children

This site is written for adults planning travel and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children, and we ask Google not to serve personalised advertising to users it identifies as children.

Security

The site is served over HTTPS as static files, with no user database to breach. No method of transmission over the internet is completely secure, but we take reasonable steps to protect information under our control, as IPP5 requires.

Changes

If this policy changes we will update this page and the date at the top. Material changes affecting advertising or analytics will be signalled through the consent banner.
