Meal Timing and Jet Lag: What Actually Helps You (and What's Just Hype)
The same airport wisdom does the rounds every few months: starve yourself for the whole flight, then fall on a plate of protein the moment you land, and jet lag won't dare touch you. Save your energy. Meal timing does help with jet lag, just nowhere near as much as the internet swears it does, because in humans food is a weak signal to the master clock in your brain and daylight leaves it in the dust. Eating on your destination's schedule is still worth the effort: it helps the new routine take hold, and it spares you trying to digest a full dinner at what your body is convinced is 3am. What food simply won't do is reset your clock by itself, however strict the plan.
You're running more than one clock
The confusion clears up the moment you realise you don't have a single body clock. You've got a head office and a scattering of branch offices. The head office is a cluster of cells the size of a pinhead in your brain (the suprachiasmatic nucleus, if you want the proper name), and it takes its orders almost entirely from light. The branch offices sit out in your liver, your gut and your fat, and those ones listen to when you eat.
One experiment from 2017 made the split about as clear as it gets. Ten healthy young men ate every meal five hours later than usual for six days. Their blood-sugar rhythm, a branch-office signal, obligingly slid over by 5.7 hours to match the new mealtimes, and the clock genes in their fat tissue shifted too, by about an hour. Their brain's master-clock markers, melatonin and cortisol, didn't move at all. Food had dragged their organs onto a new schedule while head office carried on as though nothing had happened. A 2020 review in Nature Reviews Endocrinology weighed the human evidence against the formal criteria for a time cue and landed in the same place: meal timing does something, but the direct proof of food resetting the human master clock is thin on the ground. Meals can nudge parts of the system; the thing steering the master clock is daylight.
The famous anti-jet-lag diet, held up to the light
The one everybody's heard of is the Argonne diet, dreamed up at a US national laboratory back in the 1980s. You alternate "feast" and "fast" days across the four days before you fly, with high-protein breakfasts, high-carb dinners and coffee rationed to set hours. Travel media wheels it out afresh every single year, usually around January.
The trouble is what's holding it up. There is exactly one field study anyone cites, from 2002, in which 186 National Guard personnel crossed nine time zones and the volunteers who followed the diet reported far less jet lag than those who didn't. The headline numbers look spectacular, and the design does not support them: people chose whether to do the diet, everyone knew which group they were in, and jet lag was self-reported, which is close to a recipe for a placebo effect. Nothing since has replicated it. Standard public-health guidance on jet lag is built on light, sleep timing and melatonin, and declines to endorse any special diet. So treat the strict feast-and-fast routine as unproven, and above all don't let a fiddly four-day food regimen crowd out the light plan that actually does the work. What's actually worth doing
The honest headline is that if you only have the energy to get one thing right, get light right, and then hang your meals off it. In practice that turns out simpler than any diet sheet.
Eat on destination time from the moment you land, even if it means an early dinner your stomach wasn't expecting; lining your mealtimes up with the locals is what pulls your organ clocks into place and anchors the new daily rhythm, and of everything here it's the piece to trust most. A breakfast with some protein in it on your first destination morning is a sensible bet too, mostly because it backs up the morning alertness you're chasing and pairs neatly with getting outside into morning light, though that one sits at lower confidence. Keeping your evening meals on the lighter side helps as well, since a heavy late dinner is harder to sleep on, and stopping eating roughly three hours before your target bedtime trims the reflux and the small-hours wake-ups that come with it. The one rule worth relaxing is forcing food when you're not hungry: comfort counts for something, and choking down a meal your body doesn't want buys you nothing.

Fun fact
Your gut bacteria get jet-lagged right alongside you. A 2014 study in Cell found that the trillions of microbes in the gut run on their own daily rhythm, that jet lag knocks that rhythm out of step, and that the resulting mess was enough to give germ-free mice glucose intolerance when it was transplanted into them.
