Alcohol and Flying: Why That Free Wine Turns On You
Somewhere over the ocean the crew comes round with a little bottle of free wine, and on a long night flight it feels like a small mercy. Treat it as your in-flight sleeping pill, though, and you tend to land feeling like you've been dragged behind the plane. Alcohol does make you drowsy, which is why it seems like the ideal way to sleep across an ocean, but it flattens your REM sleep, shreds the back half of the night, and pours fuel on the dehydration the dry cabin has already started. The flights where a drink tempts you most, the long dark boring ones, are exactly the flights where it costs you most. None of this is meant to talk you out of it. It only helps to see the bill before you order.
Why the free wine feels like a friend
Alcohol is a depressant, and one or two drinks genuinely do shave the time it takes to nod off. That's the whole reason a nightcap feels like it works, and it's also the bait. The sedation arrives up front, right when you're grateful for it. A few hours later your liver has finished breaking the alcohol down, the calm it bought wears off, and the rest of the night pays for it.
What it does to the rest of your night
Two things go wrong for anyone hoping to bank real rest across a flight. The first is REM sleep, the dreaming stage tied to memory and mood: alcohol suppresses it in the first half of the night, the hours right after you drink. The second shows up around the middle of the night, as the last of the alcohol clears and your sleep turns light and choppy, all wake-ups and tossing and a rebound of the shallow stages you'd normally have moved past. You end up spending more hours in the seat and getting less usable sleep out of every one of them.
Which is exactly why you can "sleep" seven hours across the Atlantic and still land feeling scraped out. You were unconscious for a good chunk of it. You weren't rested, and the seat-back clock can't tell the difference.
The dry cabin makes it worse
A cruising cabin runs at roughly 10 to 20 percent humidity, against the roughly 25 percent the Sahara averages, because the air it pulls in at altitude carries almost no moisture to begin with. You're already losing water up there faster than you would on the ground. Alcohol then shoves you the same direction: it switches off the hormone that tells your kidneys to hold on to water, so you pass more of it just as the cabin wicks the rest off your skin and breath. That double hit is the dry mouth, the thumping head, and the fog that people step off the plane and blame on the flight alone, when a couple of the drinks did their share. The trade-off, said straight
None of this is a lecture about right and wrong. If a glass of wine with your meal turns a cramped 11-hour flight into something you can actually stand, that comfort is real and you're allowed to pay for it with your eyes open. The price reads about the same every time: lighter and more broken sleep, less REM, a drier landing. What barely matters, by the way, is what's in the glass; wine, beer or spirits, the REM hit and the fractured late sleep ride in with the alcohol itself, and the dehydration scales with how much you drink, not which drink you pick.
The bad move, the one worth avoiding, is drinking straight through the hours you meant to sleep. You collect the drowsiness early and the fragmentation later, precisely when you were hoping for the deep stuff. So if you are going to drink, timing is what decides how much it costs you: keep it earlier, so most of it has cleared before your planned sleep window, hold it to what would be evening at the place you're flying to, and chase each drink with a glass of water to blunt the drying. Fun fact
Coffee can't sober you up, whatever the films suggest. Your liver breaks alcohol down at its own fixed pace, roughly one standard drink an hour, and nothing you throw at it speeds that up: not black coffee, not a cold shower, not a greasy breakfast. All the caffeine does is override the drowsiness, so you end up wide awake and every bit as impaired, minus the one signal that was telling you to slow down.
